IN MEMORIAM
DEAN SPURGEON
Per Bruce Spurgeon:
Dean Hall Spurgeon of Eagle Rock passed away Sunday July 6th, 2014. He was 91.
Dean was born May 17, 1923 in Los Angeles, California to Irwin (Bob) and
Leda Spurgeon. Dean attended school in Eagle Rock and graduated from Eagle
Rock High School where he was very active in sports. With his brother and
several others he founded the Eagle Rock Athletic Club, which continues to
this day. He joined the Army Air Force during World War II and served as a
tail gunner in a B-24. His plane was shot down and he was interred in
Sweden for a year. Returning home he worked in sales for H.J. Heinz and
Moore Business Forms, where he was salesman of the year several times. He
was an active member of the Eagle Rock Presbyterian Church. Dean served the
community in many ways including the Chamber of Commerce, BLEND (Business
Law Enforcement Northeast Division), PTA, Little League and his personal
favorite, being Santa Claus.
He was predeceased by his wife Lucy, brother Phillip and son Bob. He is
survived by his sons Bruce (and his wife Kendra) and Terry, daughter Lisa
(and her husband Jim); grandchildren Robert, James, Andrew, John, Ryan and
Sean; and 7 great-grand children.
Additional comments from Kate Beckham:
Dean, along with his wife Lucy, loved Eagle Rock. He is Eagle Rock High School Alum and was active in the Boosters Club, supporting the community where and whenever possible. Dean was Eagle Rock Chamber President, a member of Kiwanis Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Dean enjoyed playing Santa Claus, for several years, at the Chamber's Annual Children's Old Fashioned Christmas. Well noted by all, if there was music in Eagle Rock Dean and Lucy were dancing. We have no doubt that Dean and Lucy are together happily dancing again.
