SEPTEMBER MIXER [PHOTO} The August mixer held at Toros Pottery was quite interesting, I believe we all learned a little bit about the making of pottery. Toros has some beautiful original pieces in his showroom that some of our attendees quickly purchased. With the holidays fast approaching, you might want to pay Toros Pottery a visit for different and unique gifts. What a hidden treasure in our community. Toros teaches pottery making classes at the Center for the Arts and at his own studio at his business location on Eagle Rock Boulevard. A special thank you to our host for giving us the opportunity for an inside tour. MUSIC FESTIVAL [photo] The Sixth Annual Music Festival sponsored by the Center for the Arts, the Eagle Rock Chamber and Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa was another smashing success. It kicked off with a cocktail reception at the Center and quickly moved out doors. The warm October 2nd evening held several musical venues at local businesses along Colorado Boulevard. It was really nice to see the boulevard humming with foot traffic....music in the air and friends and neighbors greeting friends and neighbors. The local eateries hustling to accommodate everyone served a relaxed joyful crowd. The Center Director Jenny Krusoe and her staff, particularly Lui Sanchez, along with ERCC President Michael Nogueira did a great job in putting this wonderful community event together with the co-operation and participation of our local businesses. LIGHTING OF THE ROCK September 25, 2004, a date that will long be remembered in Eagle Rock. History was made on this warm September evening when for the first time ever there was light on the Rock. Artist Jane Tsong’s installation of light and projections “Time by the Rock” which followed the daily shadows routinely cast upon the Rock was interesting, exciting and beautiful. The six hundred in attendance also enjoyed the wonderful choir voices of 200 local community children under the artistic direction of the Los Angeles Master Chorale by Grant Gershon. The performance included an original piece by David O. “The Rock Is Art” project began in September 2003 when the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock formed a coalition led by Councilmember Antionio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles City Cultural Affairs Department and local community organizations. “The Rock Is Art” installation inauguartes the first in a series of biannual events. Open to all artists in the Los Angeles area, every two years an artist will be selected to create a temporary art installation which features the monumental rock formation. A lasting piece of art by Jane Tsong, in reverse, the black shadows from the light installation on a white background can be purchased, framed or unframed, at the Center for the Arts, a non-profit organization. Your support in their fundraising efforts is always appreciated. 323 226-1617 - 2225 Colorado Boulevard. mailto:djdaddy2010@aol.com.http://www.geocities.com/soundpro22/fun PLANT A TREE Help plant a tree by purchasing a $20.00 Plein Air painting by local artist Darryl Medeen. Please keep him and his family in your prayers and thoughts. LAFD 42 A warm welcome to Captain Stephen A. Colombel, who is happy to be here, by the way. He arrived at Station 42 earlier this month after a two year assignment in the downtown area. Captain Colombel has been with the LAFD for 29 years, he is married and the father of four. Captain Colombel is filling the vacancy left by Captain Patrick Villenueva who, after three years at Sta. 42, accepted an assignment in Hollywood. We especially want to thank him for his three years here in Eagle Rock and wish him well at his new location. This continues a 16 month string of readings of 100 or more for the index. This performance is unprecedented in NFIB survey history and bodes well for growth in the second half of the year. Is Bigger Always Better? Growth is a tool - not an end in itself. Sign of Trouble: You no longer enjoy gong to work. Solution: Closely analyze how you invest your time. You will probably find that most of your hours are not dedicated to reaching your goals. Reverse this pattern and follow your dreams. Sign of Trouble: Your employee turnover rate has increased and some of your best people are burning out. Solution: Carefully track what employees do during the day. They may get more satisfaction by using their skills and strengths differently. VOTE 2004 [flag & or box] This election day don’t leave anything to chance. Sure we have all heard at one time or another or maybe even felt “why bother to vote, one vote doesn’t really matter anyway.” Yet from the earliest decades of this nation, there have been elections held at every level of government that have been decided by very narrow margins. Your one vote does count! Please remember to vote November 2nd.
EAGLE ROCK NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL
Date line Eagle Rock, California-Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council scores again. Thanks to our dedicated Business Representatives Krista Newman, the ERNC sponsored free movie nights at Yosemite Park’s Sylvan Theater, which was a big hit. Krista led a sing-a-long to “The Sounds of Music” for an audience of over 300. This event was made a reality by Gregory Walker and the devotion of Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. The Sylvan Theater was designed as a Greek amphitheater in 1931 and was a WPA project (Work Progress Administration) under F.D.R. It was named Sylvan because of the beauty of the wooded park area: sylvan is an American term of Dutch extraction for “wooded area i.e. Pennsylvania or Penn’s woods.” Currently Jenny Krusoe, director of the Center, is working on grants to restore the dilapidated structure. Near completion is our mural, part of the North Figueroa Corridor project. Muralist Roger Doland has done an exceptional job in his figurative renderings and illustration of the Sylvan Theater as the setting of this bigger than life dimensional sculpture-like stairway piece. The intent of the project is to bring cohesiveness to a strip of L.A. that has been called ‘‘Calle de Muerte’‘ for years by residents. As part of the next phase, the Eagle Rock High School Key Club and members of the ERNC board canvassed homes along North Figueroa for eligible tree locations. Members also walked Yosemite for eligible green spots. Trees will be planted by Environmental Affairs during November and residenys are requested only to water them. In a further effort to beautify Eagle Rock members of the Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful walked the other major boulevards to drum up support for the next round of tree plantings. The ERNC Clean Crew may be coming to a park near you. In our continuing effort to de-litter and de-weed Eagle Rock, our Youth Committee, along with the Eagle Rock High School Key Club has taken up parts of York, Figueroa and Yosemite as a ‘Clean up and Green up’ excursion of the neighborhood. If you see a strip that needs sprucing up, or would like to volunteer please call us at 323.257.6381 or Email me at President@NeighborhoodCouncil.org. Be Seeing You... ANITA HULTMAN Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council President
