July - August Newsletter 2005
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Greetings Our Eagle Rock Summer Arts & Crafts Festival, held July 10th, was a huge success with all of our crafts, food and children’s activities. Much of our success was due to our co-chair Elda Ulmer and her volunteer coordinator Anne Wolf, and to all the volunteers including the Eagle Rock High School Key Club. We all know it takes a team working together, along with a lot of time and effort to put any event on. A very special thank you to each and everyone of you who so graciously donated your time. Our 9th Annual Summer Concert kick off, Ronnie & the Classics, held on the same day as our Summer Arts & Crafts Festival, was also a noted success. But when was rock & roll not a success? This great concert was sponsored by Universal Bank thanks to Branch Manager Shirley Pascal. As in the past few years, an added plus was having the Rock’n Rodders with their great classic car show. The full day was a huge success and a good time was had by all. Check our calendar of events in this issue and mark your calendar for the remaining four summer concerts. Come relax with family and friends, bring a picnic basket or enjoy some delicious food from the venders that participate at our Certified Farmer’s Market every Friday. Please note - also in this issue the new businesses that have opened and the information regarding a business security patrol service, which we hope to have up and running soon along Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards. Speaking of business, it was decided at this month’s board meeting to re-schedule our Business Expo to the spring of 2006, giving the committee more time to pull it together and hopefully network with and include our neighboring communities. Congratulations to ERCC V.P. Allen Yap, E.T.Y. Parts Inc. for receiving the State’s prestigious “Small Business Award” last month in Sacramento.

IN AND AROUND EAGLE ROCK CRIME vs. CRIME PREVENTION This is an update to our crime alert meeting held May 17th after an increase in business crime. Written by: Victor Parrino, Colombo’s Restaurant & ERCC Director Friday July 1st 2005 two restaurants in the west end of Pasadena were robbed!! As the news media described the events: “Three black males with guns robbed the customers, then the restaurants Marie Calenders and Robbie’s Waffles and Ribs.” Please note “customers, then the restaurant” were robbed. Although we continue to hear crime is down. Crime may be down over all but not necessarily in our back yard. We have received a formal proposal from Post Alarm Systems to provide a minimum of five random patrols between 11:00 p.m. and 6: 00 a.m. seven days a week. The patrols will be made in a fully marked patrol vehicle, equipped with a light bar, spot lights, two random and GPS systems. Any suspicious or criminal activity will be reported to LAPD and immediate action will be taken as necessary. Further, Post patrol will provide random visibility patrols between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and twenty-four hour response to those participating members. Signs and window stickers will be provided along with substantial discounts on security and monitoring services. The cost for the patrol service will be fifty dollars per month. Charges for security and monitoring services will be extra and specific to the requirements of each location. Post Patrol Senior Lead Officer Delivan Diaz will be assigned to the area and will be the liaison to the businesses, Chamber and the LAPD. On July 6, 2005 Kaye Beckham and I met with Dennis Mealy, Director of Patrol and Emergency Response Center of Post Alarm Systems. Dennis informed us of the successful security patrol service provided to the Highland Park Business Improvement District [BID] which has operated for over two years. Dennis stated their patrol officers are all licensed, trained and must re-qualify with their weapons on a regular basis. Further more they are a pro-active security patrol, meaning they will assess the situation and take action as necessary, including making a “Citizens Arrest” , while contacting local law enforcement. If you do not have an alarm system, Post will give you a discounted bid to install and monitor, while providing immediate response to a triggered alarm. If you already have an alarm system you do not have to change companies, however, you can have your alarm company have your alarm system monitored by Post.
Those business owners or managers who signed the attendance sheet at the May 17th meeting at Colombo’s will receive a letter from Post and a proposal support letter from the Chamber. The letters will be followed up by a personal contact from Post Senior Lead Officer Delivan Diaz. If you were unable to attend the meeting and would like to be contacted by a Post representative please call Dennis Mealey, Director of Patrol at 626- 446-7159. JUNE MIXER (PHOTO ] [ Left to right] James Galicia, Amanda Brown, Michael Nogueira Mgr. Shirley Pascal, William Kilgore, Belinda Aro, Nimfa Lopez, caterer Sandra Tuohy Our June Mixer at Universal Bank took us to the islands, thanks to our Universal Bank host Shirley Pascal and staff. Caterer Sandra Tuohy did a great job following the island theme with an array of delectable finger foods. It was a fun mixer, kicking off the summer, where we welcomed new and returning members who did quite a bit of networking. Shirley had such a great time that she already signed in for next year. A special thank you to Shirley and her staff for hosting our June Mixer, and to those who donated raffle gifts and purchased tickets. The continued support from Chamber members and guests is what keeps this great organization in the forfront. http://www.pilateseaglerock.com. EAGLE ROCK COMMUNITY FLAG RAISING FLAG PHOTO June 14th, Flag Day, was a great day for Eagle Rock and will forever be a major part of Eagle Rock’s history. This was the day that our long awaited community flag was raised. The honors were bestowed upon Mayor Elect, at the time, and CD14 Council member Antonio Villaraigosa along with Captain Jones and Firefighter Paramedic Ruben Terrazas, Engineer Enrique Chavez, and Firefighter Raymond Cuevas from LAFD Station 42. This grand event started with a reception at 6:00 p.m. Linda Allen, Chair of the ERCPR, and who was instrumental in leading the design efforts of the Eagle Rock Flag, set up a beautiful array of finger food donated by local businesses and residents. Flag memorabilia was on sale, along with organization information on The Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce, ERCPR and TERA. Local news media was present along with Adelphia who taped the event. A special thank you to young Mr. Turner for providing the music, Westfield Shoppingtown Manager Byran Paul for providing the location for our transport shuttle, to the staff at the Cove Restaurant for their assistance in procuring the parking lot, to the Northeast LAPD Explorer Scouts and Senior Lead Officers Chris Cooper and Mark Allen for their presence. I especially want to thank the volunteers, some of whom I met for the first time, you know who you are, your assistance in setting up and cleaning up was very much appreciated. I was proud to serve as co-chair of this historic community event. It was quite a moment when our community flag was seen for the first time flying proudly along side the United States and California State flag. The three flags are very visible from the 2, & 134 freeways. If you haven’t already....this is a must see! Our flag and the three flag poles, which are actually cellular towers, came to be through an agreement with two cellular phone companies to place cellular towers in Eagle Rock. Our community flag is through the courtesy of Nextel.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED The first Jim Beckham Memorial Education Scholarship of $1000.00 was awarded June 16th at the annual Awards Presentation Ceremony in the Eagle Rock High School Auditorium. The Beckham family was proud to present their first scholarship to Madaleine Hernandez, a lovely young lady who has quite an ambition. Madaleine will be attending Biola University were she will pursue studies in mathematics for secondary education. Upon completion she hopes to combine missionary work and teaching in a foreign country. She is the eldest child of three and the first to attend college. Criteria for the scholarship was a 3.5 grade point average, pursuing a teaching career, leadership qualities, and a 500 word essay on “why I should receive this scholarship.” Madaleine came through with flying colors which made our decision easy. She will also be eligible for a minimum of $500.00 for three additional years if she continues with her major and maintains a 3.0 grade point average. Donations to this fund are always appreciated and are tax deductible. Checks may be payable to Jim Beckham Memorial Scholarship Fund and mailed to the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce. The scholarship information and distribution is through the ERHS Alumni Association Scholarship Program.

Michael Nogueira New members David Orozco, a family of eight, has recently opened “That Yarn Store,” a knitting and crochet store with an emphasis on community. According to Thea, the oldest daughter, their concept for That Yarn Store is to provide a neighborhood hangout nook for those seasoned in knitting and crocheting along with those just starting out. Frances, another daughter, stated “ knitting is meditational creativity. It is like Japanese brush painting, but you can wear it.” In addition to being a friendly place for people to gather, That Yarn Store will provide workshops for all levels, pattern adjustments and finishing. We boost quality yarn products and supplies...along with comfy couches. Our store, located at 1578 Colorado Boulevard, will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. For further information please call 323 256-9276. BUSINESS NOTES CALIFORNIA SMALL BUSINESS “ A Salute to Small Business” [PHOTO] Allen Yap & dad Keith Yap, recipients of “California Small Business Award” June 15, 2005, a local business in Eagle Rock received a prestigious award from the State of California. About 370 people and over 60 State Legislators attended the awards luncheon at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento. There were a total of 80 Small Business recipients from California honored. E.T. Y. Parts Inc., a European and Asian Foreign Auto Parts company located at 2144 Colorado Boulevard has been in Eagle Rock since 1980. The award they received was the “California Small Business Award.” What makes this significant is that only one business in the 44th Assembly District receives this award. Carol Liu, the Assemblywoman that represents Eagle Rock has a large district, she also represents the communities of La Canada-Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Arcadia, Temple City, Duarte, Monrovia, Glassell Park, Highland Park and Altadena. This award is given to an outstanding small business that represents the 44th District in a positive light. Keith Yap and Allen Yap, father & son, the owners of this family business, were given the award based on longevity of the business, use of technology to enhance their business, community activism and the ability to bring customers from other areas of Los Angeles to Eagle Rock to purchase their products. “Allen and his family represent what is good about small business and is a positive attribut to the 44th District” On another note....The ERCC is very proud of Allen and whole heartily congratulate him and his family upon receiving this prestigious small business award. We also appreciate all of Allen’s hard work as our Chamber’s 1st. V.P. on the Executive Board, membership chair and web master. ERCPR STATE GRANT UPDATE By Linda Allen, President ERCPR The Eagle Rock Community Preservation & Revitalization Corporation has recently concluded the grant program awarded through the office of Senator Jack Scott on July 1, 2000, ending June 30, 2005. This grant included a facade improvement program and parking studies of the commercial district. Projects had to be completed and grant documents presented to the state by April 30th for processing, although the grant actually ended June 30th. After the April date, grant money for business facades were no longer available from this program. The Store Front Improvement Program [SIP], or facade program, benefitted 28 applicants, some of which extended to multiple properties with a number of businesses within them. All in all, the program affected the facade upgrades of approximately 45 businesses. Two of these were historic landmark buildings. Included in the 28 were 8 Beautification Grant Awards. These were designated at the end of our process. Two parking studies were performed with the monies provided by this grant. The first, conducted by the Valley Economic Development Corporation [VEDC], itemized the statistical and quantitative issues of affecting the commercial area, and offered possible solutions. The second, conducted by Civic Enterprise Associates/MDA Johnson-Favaro Architects [CEA}, was a strategic planning document. They studyed the solutions offered by VEDC and investigated which ones would work in this area. CEA put forth a short term and long term management plan. The results of this study are on going, as Colorado Boulevard has become a pilot program with the City of Los Angeles for both logistical parking issues and also parking regulations issues. CEA is working with the Los Angeles Planning Department, the Department of Transportation, and the Council office to come up with a strategic community parking management plan. This is a first for Los Angeles and the results will be important for other areas of the city, especially the areas which contain older buildings, where parking and change of use issues have a problem. The results of the above second parking study and pilot program, plus recognition of the SIP awardees will be presented in a public meeting in the late summer or early fall. The ERCPR believe this grant program has caused an enormous amount of improvement and revitalization of the commercial district. Not only has it given direct help to applicants, but has encouraged other businesses to upgrade their facades as well. The parking element of the program has helped us deal with the current problems, see the relationship of the actual logistics of parking to the parking regulation difficulties, and plan for current and long term solutions. Thank you to Senator Jack Scott and his staff for the opportunity to affect these changes, to the consultants who aided in this endeavor and are continuing to do so, plus the ERCPR board for spending years of their time governing and administering this effort. We had hoped to make a significant difference, and I believe we have. MARKETING AGAINST THE GRAIN You started a unique business so why market it like everybody else? Don’t, says John R. Graham of Communications. He suggests: Advertise When Others Are Pulling Back: During a down economy many businesses cut their ad budgets. Now is the time to pour it on. You’ll get more for your money and stand out from the crowd. Write Longer: “Who says every business letter has to be one page or less?” Graham asks. Feel free to expand, so long as your letter is well-written and focuses on the customer’s needs rather than how great you are. Nix The Follow-up Phone Call: Calling to ask, “Did you get my proposal/information ?” will only annoy your prospect. Instead of trying to sell something on your schedule, give your prospects as much clear information as you can about how you can help their business. When they’re ready, they’ll respond. http://www.equifax.com)http://www.experian.com)http://www.tua.com) Information taken from; Ventures, Summer 2005 [an American Express Publication]] \ DRAB OFFICE ? Here are seven cures that might help you perk up the work atmosphere and employee morale. Before hiring a decorator, consider these remedies from design consultant Monica Ricci, a guest on HGTV’s show Mission: Organization. 1. Wall Paint. It is your biggest bang for the buck. Don’t be afraid to use bold colors. 2. Art. A few well-chosen pieces do wonders for blank walls. 3. Wall Zones. Instead of taping messages willy-nilly on the walls, organize specific areas for awards, communications, etc. Things will seem less chaotic. 4. Live Plants. Fake plants are dust magnets; live ones bring energy. 5. Lighting. Balancing those greenish fluorescent overheads with a mix of halogen and incandescent lamps will warm your office atmosphere. 6. Running Water. For about $30.00 you can buy a small fountain whose gentle noise will soothe your staff. 7. Storage. Filing cabinets don’t have to be ugly. Decorative file boxes are inexpensive and eye pleasing.
