IN AND AROUND EAGLE ROCK
MARCH MIXER Our March 2005 mixer was hosted by one of the Chamber’s new members, Jennifer Mathews, owner and instructor for Pilates Eagle Rock. Although a bit nervous with her first mixer, Jennifer came through with flying colors. She presented a wonderful array of food and interesting demonstrations of her equipment and pilates technique. She has done a great job with the interior of her studio. It is both an inviting and relaxing environment that she has created to foster the health conscience lifestyle her studio offers. Jennifer teaches both private and group instruction, she can be reached at 323 254-2444 or www.pilateseaglerock.com.
FARMER’S MARKET ANNIVERSARY
The ERCC Farmers Market celebrated its 7th Anniversary, Friday, April 8th. A few hundred people came to help us. Vendors handed out drawing tickets for prizes they donated when an item was purchased. Winning tickets were drawn every half hour starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 8: p.m. with the grand prize of a 13 inch color TV donated by Sir Michael’s Enterprises. “Elvis” entertained, delicious fresh prepared food was available, along with fresh baked good, vegetables, flowers and miscellaneous items. Worth watching were the children in the petting zoo, which was always filled with smiling and some in awe little faces, excited at the marvel of being able to touch and feed the baby animals. If you haven’t visited us yet, come on down to Merton and Casper any Friday evening from 5 - 9 p.m. There truly is something for everyone.

Findings Professor Alan Hedge, director of Cornell’s Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory, has found that increasing an office’s temperature to 77 degrees from 68 degrees lowers errors and decreases break times. Raising the heat can save employers about $2.00 per worker per hour.

Get well wishes are extended to Dick Thiel, [Capri Restaurant] as he recovers from knee surgery. BUSINESS NOTES
From the Editor....Dr. George Shapiro
The Business of Fine Dining
I guess I can call myself a food connoisseur, since the art of eating tasty food is at the top of my list of priorities for my week. For being such a small town, Eagle Rock has some of the most diverse choice restaurants. I remember as a kid sitting at one of the four barstools at the old Blue Chip, which at the time was just a burger stand. That burger stand was no bigger than my closet at home, but man - I can still savor the taste of those burgers. I wonder sometimes if these places have a secret vault where they keep all their cooking recipes? The small closet size burger stand is now quite a bit larger, but the burgers are still tasty as ever. Since we are talking burgers, we must not leave out the other fine burger place down the boulevard, Jim’s. They recently changed owners and have successfully kept those large burgers as delicious as ever. I actually brought a friend for lunch a couple of weeks ago and I ordered Jim’s famous avocado fries. My friend thought it was bizarre until she tasted them and was pleasantly surprised. Another one of my favorite lunch places is the Peruvian place next door to Blockbuster. The name of the place, however, slips my mind, but not the extraordinary food they cook up. My favorite dish is called the “saltho de pollo.” which in English is translated to “salty chicken.” What ever it is, it is quite tasty. They also provide a salsa that tastes homemade. Lunch places in Eagle Rock are abundant, and one cannot forget the Italian Bakery across the street from Tommy’s. I had the fortunate experience of having one of my best friend’s mother work there in high school, so she would make us sandwiches everyday for lunch. I can honestly say I have never had another sandwich quite like the Italian combo, and whatever you do, don’t forget the cream puffs for desert! Now, the Thai Food, right next to Café Beaujolais, which has to be mentioned in this article, has the best breaded chicken strips mixed with rice and shrimp. The spicy shrimp soup is just a killer as a meal in itself.
Now if you desire a great steak, you can’t top Colombo’s for their Filet Mignon or the Chicken Cordon Bleu. If you’re there for lunch the Chicken Panini is a must. The breakfast establishments in Eagle Rock are also great. Pat and Lorraine’s has an omelet called the” Italian Omelet” that you must order if you are really, really hungry. This dish is mixed with all kinds of ingredients such as sausage, cheeses and Italian sauce. I have to say that Camilo’s makes an omelet like no other. It’s called the the “York Boulevard Omelet” It’s filled with mushrooms, cheese and stuff that makes your taste buds scream with culinary pleasure.
As far as Mexican food goes, Eagle Rock has one of the most authentic in the Northeast area, La Fuentes. Being raised on a Mexican diet leaves me an expert in Mexican food. They serve a shrimp dish called “camarones mojo de ajo”, served with either corn or flour tortillas. This dish is cooked in a sauce that I can only describe as a thick luscious barbeque type sauce. I also must mention Casa Bianca. The pizza there is difficult to describe, I cannot find the words, other than it’s really out of this world!. The only unpleasant experience when your mouth is watering is that 45 minute wait, however I usually put it to good use socializing with Eagle Rock friends and neighbors. I have just mentioned a few of my favorite places, there are so many other great restaurants in Eagle Rock. Too many to mention in this article and many that I have not had the fortunate experience of tasting their foods. I’m sure everyone has their own little favorite dish at their own favorite restaurant. I will be happy to experience the pleasures of fine food......that is, if you’re willing to take me to lunch!

I WANT TO BE 6 AGAIN .......
I hereby officially tender my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of a 6 year old again. I want to go to McDonald;s and think that it’s a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks. I want to think M & M’s are better than money because you can eat them. I want to play kickball during recess and paint with watercolors in art. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer day. I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, addition tables and simple nursery rhymes, but that didn’t bother you, because you didn’t know what you didn’t know and you didn’t care. When all you knew was to be happy because you didn’t know all the things that should make you worried and upset. I want to think that the world is fair. That everyone in it is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. Somewhere in my youth ... I matured and I learned too much. I want to live simply again. I don’t want a day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, kind words, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind and making angels in the snow I want to be 6 again.
