IN AND AROUND EAGLE ROCK
AUGUST MIXER
The August Mixer held at E.T.Y Auto Parts, Inc. and hosted by Allen Yap
and his family was quite an event. Not only was it one of the summer’s
hottest evenings, but temperatures also rose with the excitement of
winning at the blackjack table. Those arriving at the mixer were handed a
$100 bill [play money of course!] Can you believe a place at the table was
hard to come by? The delicious food, served in abundance was prepared by
another Chamber member, the Isla Buffett & Grill, located at 4420 Eagle
Rock Boulevard. There was quite a full house with a lot of networking
going on. All in all it was a fun mixer. A big thank you to Allen and his
family and to those that brought raffle gifts and purchased drawing
tickets. Your support to the Chamber is always very much appreciated.

In case you did not know, E.T.Y specializes in European and Japanese

EAGLE ROCK’S FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BACK!
Over its seven year history the Eagle Rock Music Festival has grown to
be the largest party in northeast Los Angeles, and it will be happening
again, Friday, September 30 through October 2nd in some highly
unusual places.
As always, the Eagle Rock Music Festival includes a startling range of
performances to please all ages and people from diverse cultural
backgrounds. The main event is October 1st, 6 p.m. to midnight
when thirty concerts will be performed simultaneously. Among the types of
music audiences will hear are Taiko drumming, Cuban Jazz, Indi-Rock and
Latin-Rock. Festivalgoers will walk up and down Colorado and Eagle Rock
Boulevards to hear groups including Ann Likes Red, Café Fuego, the Taiko
drummers, Bennie and Swampgators and many, many more. What makes this
Saturday night music festival really unique are the 30 local venues,
including not just clubs, restaurants and coffee houses, but a florist
shop, beauty salon, auto garage, real estate office, gas station and
several other storefronts along Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards
hosting. To make getting around easy, a free shuttle will be
available throughout the evening until 10:00 p.m. The evening will
conclude with a final concert at the intersection of Caspar and Merton,
ending at midnight.
But even before the main event, the Eagle Rock Music Festival will kick
off with a party at Fatty’s on Friday, September 30th at 7:00
p.m. The street will be closed to make way for dancing in the streets.
It’s a great
time to come and mingle with residents and visitors from as far away as
Texas.
On October 2nd beginning at 11:00 a.m. the Center for the
Arts will host a brunch followed by a concert of classical music
programmed by the Renaissance Arts Academy. The afternoon continues with
classical and innovative music concerts all afternoon. The festival will
close with a 7:30 p.m. concert with Open Gate Theater’s Eclectic Jass.
All events are free of charge.
The festival is presented with the generous support of Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa, Council District 14, the Los Angeles Department of Cultural
Affairs, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Recording Industries’
Music Performance Trust Funds through the Professional Musicians Union 47,
and the community of Eagle Rock.

EAGLE ROCK BEAUTIFUL!
The Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful Progress Report
By: Ursula More-Brown, Director CERB
These past three months were filled with work for volunteers who so
generously give of their time.
With help from the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Collaborative planted
10 Magnolia trees in the medians on Colorado Boulevard, and 5 Cassia trees
on Eagle Rock Boulevard. Additionally, the large pots you may have noticed
on the median strip on Eagle Rock Boulevard and plantings surrounding the
bases of existing trees are a courtesy of the Collaborative. A City permit
granted to the organization allows for an additional 22 trees to be placed
on our two main boulevards.
The Wiota Circle make-over and the Save-on “Welcome to Eagle Rock “
monument sign are in the process of being permitted. Wiota Circle was
granted a City Matching fund and recently
established its own web site for stackholder information dissemination.
The quarterly informational and progress public meeting for the
Betterment of Eagle Rock is being held on October 8, 2005 from 9:00 a.m.
to 12 noon at the Eagles Club, located at 1596 Yosemite Drive, at the
corner of Townsend Avenue. A complimentary continental breakfast will be
served.

BUSINESS NOTES
PRIVATE PATROL STATUS
By Victor Parrino, ERCC Director
Several months have gone by - is crime down? If so, for how long? Did
LAPD suddenly get more patrol officers for the Eagle Rock area? Have we
forgotten being told there isn’t enough patrol personnel to adequately
cover the Northeast especially Eagle Rock?
As of September 12, 2005 Post Patrol has contacted all of the people
who attended the crime prevention meeting at Colombo’s and signed an
interest form. There has been forty business representatives contacted and
of those contacted, eight businesses have signed up for security patrol.
We have been told that if a hundred businesses or residents sign up
Post Patrol will have a
MARKED CAR WITH AN ARMED PATROL PERSON in the patrol area 24 hours a
day 7 days a week!!!!! A similar program has been operating in Highland
Park for almost two years with great success - crime is down, call
Northeast Division and ask them.
Have we once again become falsely secure? Do we think it will be
someone else’s business or home that will be vandalized or robbed? Are we
thinking penny wise and pound-foolish? Is $50.00 a month or $1.65 a day to
much for a patrol presence that would act as a deterrent to vandals,
robbers and violent criminal activity?
Please contact Post Patrol Senior Lead officer Javier Arias at 323
353-1340 or Phil Peters at 626 232-9335 if you have any questions or would
like to discuss the service to be provided.

Grant money from Senator Jack Scott in the amount of $300,000 was given
to Eagle Rock for a revitalization program. In July of 2000, $200,000 was
allocated for business facades, $50,000 for a parking study which will
continue, and $50,000 for administrative costs. Twenty-seven commercial
buildings benefitted from the project and 45 plus businesses - multi use
in several commercial buildings. Our hats off to each and everyone of
these dedicated people who so generously donated their time and energy to
this worthwhile project.
THANK YOU
Dear Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce:
On behalf of the board of the ERCPR and myself, I would like to
sincerely thank your organization and the Women’s 20th Century
Club for the recent Recognition Evening which was provided for us,
honoring the completion of the state grant concerning facade upgrades and
parking studies for the business district. It was a beautiful event, and I
know the board felt rewarded with the warm thanks for the business
community and the wonderful awards and certificates from the chamber, the
legislators and neighboring communities. I was personally quite
overwhelmed. Concerning the grant project, the ERCPR board felt it had
a mission to help businesses in a very concrete way, and they were glad
the community believed it was an effort well done. We also thank the many
people involved in the nurture and success of this project. Again, many
thanks for the lovely evening and the recognition of the board.
Sincerely, Linda Allen, President - Eagle Rock Community Preservation &
Revitalization Corp.
AN OPEN LETTER
A Thank You to our City Councilman - now our new City Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa
On behalf of my Aunt, Ann Colombo, I want to personally thank you for
your efforts in recognizing Colombo’s Italian Steak House celebrating its
fiftieth year anniversary, with a permanent city seal street sign.
The sign adds a great deal to our location. Thank you doesn’t seem to
do justice for the joy my Aunt feels for the recognition you have given
her and her late husband, Sam.
With God’s help may you follow through with all of the commitments you
made to the community and the City of Los Angeles. Thank you again, and we
hope to see you and your lovely family at Colombo’s again.
Sincerely,
Vic Parrino for Ann Colombo
Editors Note: Colombo’s celebrated their fiftieth anniversary August 7,
2004. The Colombo family was happy to receive their sign, which was placed
on a pole in front of the restaurant last month.
Did You Know ?
Get the real history on a long standing, well known hamburger stop. Did
you know that the original Tommy’s World Famous Hamburger was founded in
1946 by Tommy Koulax? Tommy’s Hamburgers is a family owned chain of 27
fast food restaurants in Southern California. Our Eagle Rock location, if
you did not know, is 1717 Colorado Boulevard, where, at any given time,
you will see a long line of cars waiting to reach the drive-thru window.
The restaurants feature a limited menu consisting of high-quality,
low-priced food. The entrees served include hamburgers, hot dogs, tamales,
french fries and chili fries. All entrees are served with Tommy’s famous
chili. We welcome this historic hamburger chain along with General Manager
Brent Maire, into the chamber.
