| PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Greetings
What a year it has been, lots of new members, a new directory coming
out real soon. A great slate of Board Members, a very successful
fundraiser last month, and so many really good mixers throughout the year.
Our October Halloween mixer, hosted by Lu Lu and Ray Mirzakhanian at
Century 21 Crest was awesome, with quite an array of costumes, live music
and abundance of food. Many thanks to our hosts!
Our Farmer’s Market is in full swing with winter hours from 4:30 p.m.
to 8: p.m. on Friday evenings, not only do we have great produce and
prepared foods, we also have hand crafted items for the holidays. Come
check us out. As our holidays fast approach, we need to be concerned about
crime in our community, statistics show crime rises during this time of
the year. Busy shoppers need to remember not to leave valuables visible in
their vehicles, and to park in a well lighted area with other vehicles. Be
aware of your surroundings. Armed robberies and break-ins also occur in
our businesses and in our homes. Make sure we leave our buildings and
homes secure and have our business and neighborhood watches up and
running.
The Children’s Olde Fashion Christmas and the lighting of the Christmas
tree at the Eagle Rock City Hall is fast approaching, mark your calendar
for Friday, December 2nd., 7:00 p.m. Come join the festivities
where you will have the opportunity to meet our new City Councilmember
Jose Huizar.
Our November mixer will be hosted by Sossy Semerdjian and Anne Kelly at
Bank of America and please note that December is the only time of the year
that our monthly mixer is not on the fourth Tuesday. This year, once
again, it will be hosted by LAFD Station 42 and Sir Michael’s Limo & Party
Rental at the Station, Tuesday, December 13th.
Wishing You a Happy Holiday Season!
See You Around Eagle Rock

OCTOBER MIXER
Our October Halloween Mixer was fun and exciting, for every time you
turned around there was an interesting character, pirate, queen, ghost or
goblin, the costumes were great! A big thank you to our hosts Lu Lu and
Ray Mirzakhanian, Century 21 Crest, for welcoming everyone into the
festive realm of Halloween. Everyone that attended enjoyed the live music,
delicious food, lots of door prizes and, most of all the great company.
Thanks again to Lu Lu and Ray, and to all of you who supported the mixer
with contributions of raffle gifts and purchasing the drawing tickets.
Also want to thank two Board members, who were kept busy tending bar, La
Dell Stapp and Roe Muzingo.
CRIME ALERT SAFETY TIPS
On Saturday, 9:00 a.m. November 5th, volunteers gathered at
the Eagle Rock City Hall to get “Crime Alert Safety” flyers distributed
through out our community. The flyers were simultaneously being handed out
in each of the Northeast communities. This endeavor was sponsored by the
LAPD Community Police Advisory Board, [C-PAB] and Business and Law
Enforcement Northeast Division, [BLEND]. The flyers are meant to alert
community members and automobile owners how to protect their motor vehicle
and their belongings inside. Burglary theft from vehicles and Grand Theft
Auto have been on the rise for the last several months, with the holiday
season fast approaching we took steps to get the word out. Designed
in-house at the station, approved by Captain Morris Smith, C-PAB and
BLEND, the flyer is simple and to the point. We are in hope that the
residents and business owners will take heed and follow the simple rules
of prevention.
As a board member of both organizations listed above, I want to
acknowledge and thank the volunteers from the Eagle Rock Charter School
and Board members Tony Torres and Clifford Moseley for organizing the
students, The Eagle Rock High School Key Club and Lanie and La Dell Stapp
for enlisting the Club’s volunteers, Lucy Spurgeon, Lynda De Angelo
[Curves], Denise Miller [GAMC Therapy & Wellness Center], Officer Susan
Carrasco and Explorer Scouts from the Northeast LAPD. A very special thank
you to Scout Master David Lear, whose Boy Scouts on another mission that
day handed out 2000 flyers. All in all well over 7000 flyers were
distributed throughout our community. This would not have been possible
without the kindness and generosity of Bob Velasquez, owner and operator
of Commercial Printing, who donated the printing of 8000 flyers. And what
would we do without Trader Joe’s, management did not hesitate when a
request was made for drinking water for volunteers, and as always gave
more than was requested, their continued generosity to community events is
truly appreciated.
Once again I want to acknowledge the volunteers, who so generously gave
of their time. It never ceases to amaze me what can be accomplished in a
relatively short time when people get together and work for a good cause.
Please know that each of you are appreciated, and if I have forgotten to
mention your name, I apologize and know that you too are appreciated. .
Have a safe and happy holiday season. Kaye M. Beckham
ER COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHALL
Congratulations to Allen Yap! At our October meeting, there was a
unanimous vote to have Allen represent us as our Community Grand Marshall
in our 61st. Annual Northeast Los Angeles Holiday Parade and
Winterfest. This year’s theme, “An Old Fashioned Christmas”, sound
familiar? It seems we will be right on track this holiday season,
celebrating the parade and the 34th Annual Children’s Olde
Fashioned Christmas on December 2nd at the Eagle Rock City Hall
at 7:00 p.m. Allen is a well deserving choice this year, he has diligently
worked as our first Vice President creating a great web site for the
Chamber and has reached out to the business community bringing in new
membership. Earlier this year Allen was recognized in Sacramento [through
Senator Jack Scott], receiving the California Small Business Award. Allen
operates a family owned business, E.T.Y Parts, Inc., a European and Asian
Foreign Auto Parts company located at 2144 Colorado Boulevard. Allen will
ride in the parade with his lovely wife Aimee
and their two young sons, Ethan and Keith. The Yap family’s classic
vehicle will be provided by Michael Nogueira Jr. This year ERCC President
Michael Nogeuira Jr, will also be riding in the Annual Holiday Parade with
his lovely wife Eugenie and their two handsome sons.
This year’s Parade, “An Olde Fashioned Christmas”, will be held Sunday,
December 4th at 1:00 p.m. on Figueroa Street in Highland Park.
Everybody loves a Parade, come show your support by attending this fun
family event.

BUSINESS NOTES
Featuring Our Local Businesses
LTC HOME HEALTH CARE
Kaye M. Beckham, Founder & Executive Director
Starting with the new year, January 1, 2006, LTC Home Health Care
Services Inc. will be moving into its 26th year of providing
custodial care to Seniors and assisting moms & newborns. It was in
December of 1980 that I made a life altering decision. That decision was
to assist those in need to remain in their own home. This thought process
occurred while working at the Visiting Nurses Association in Glendale as
their referral intake nurse. The VNA is a skilled nursing agency which is
reimbursed by Medi-Care, Medi-Cal and some insurances. The VNA provides
skilled nursing [by a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse],
Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social Services, and Hospice. They
did not then, nor do they now, provide “custodial care”. More than half of
the calls to the VNA that I was receiving were requesting custodial care,
unfortunately, this type of service did not exist in our area. Just in
case you are not familiar with this type of service, custodial care
consists of assisting with everyday living needs; personal care,
monitoring medications and vital signs, preparation of meals, lite
housekeeping, laundry, and following prescribed exercise programs and/or
treatments, assisting with transportation and anything else that might be
needed to keep our clients comfortable in their own home. It became very
apparent to me that there definitely was a need for this type of service.
I consulted with my husband, Jim, and our three children, for I knew if I
were to pursue this enterprise I would need my family’s support. I
received the green light, if you will, to take another path in following
my passion, my dream - to help others. Everything happened rather quickly
and just kind of fell into place [an affirmation that it was just meant to
be ?], office space was rented, - in Eagle Rock, of course, letters went
out to referral bases, ads went into the local newspapers for caregivers
and Sacramento paperwork was filled out to open my business. Was is scary?
You bet! LTC stands for “Loving Tender Care”, my second choice for a name
by the way. I think most of us are familiar with the term “Tender Loving
Care”. When my application was submitted to the state, I received a
notification that I could not use TLC, because another business up north
already had that name. Not wanting to divert from my message of Tender
Loving Care at home, I transposed the letters. Today, those letters are
two fold - loving tender care and long term care, which is very apropro
for to day in the medical field.
For twenty five years [where has the time gone?] LTC has been helping
those in need to stay in their own home. Some are in need of short term
care to heal after surgery or an illness, others are bed bound or
ambulatory, some require long term care and others pass on. Whatever the
needs, I feel blessed to have been a part of so many lives throughout this
time period.
A little over ten years ago, a Maternal Child Health Care program was
initiated for moms and newborns. [most of my previous nursing experience
had been in this field working at a major hospital in Labor & Delivery]
This program was set up at a reduced rate for short term care to assist
new parents with the transition of a new little life coming home. This
program has been a
a fun and happy experience.
A little bit about service and our caregivers. LTC provides a minimum
of two hours once a week up to 24 hours a day seven days a week. Our
employees are Companion Homemakers, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Home
Health Aides. We do our very best to match the client’s needs with the
skills of our employees. All of our caregivers are screened and finger
printed, must have a current TB test and be certified in CPR. All of our
employees attend a four hour orientation program prior to employment. Our
maternal child health caregivers are also certified in infant and child
CPR, they are trained, through LTC, in pertinent classes related to this
field. LTC is proud to have a State Provider number for continuing
education and offers a monthly class covering a wide range of health care
information. Most of our caregivers need 48 hours of continuing education
classes in a two year period to keep their California State Certification
current.
Our staff at LTC works very closely with other entities in the home
health care field, as part of a team we provide the very best care
possible to mutual clients. LTC has a nurse on call 24 hours a day, seven
days a week readily available to assist our caregivers, clients and
families as needed.
For further information on service, arrange for a guest speaker, or
attend classes please call 323 254-9162.
We would like to feature your business in your monthly Chamber
newsletter. Please fax your business information to 323 254-3312
WORK SMART & PLAY HARD
Aspiring entrepreneurs are always warned that they will have to work
harder that corporate employees. But the secret that veteran business
owners often keep to themselves is that entrepreneurs have more fun - and
not just at the office. While a recent study showed that 30% of business
owners regularly work more that 60 hours a week, they can control when
they put in those hours (and often, thanks to technologies, where they do
so). With delegation and wireless gadgets your time can be cleverly
managed away from the office doing what really matters to you - like
spending more time with family, volunteering, or doing something that’s
just for you, golf, gym, tennis, etc., or you might want to take that
quiet stroll on the beach or in the mountains. The consensus is that
leisure pursuits make more effective bosses and competitors. It may seem
counterintuitive, but getting out of the office could be the best thing
for you - and your company.
