PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings

As summer approaches, our committee for the Summer Arts Festival, which is scheduled for July 10th, in conjunction with our opening concert for the summer and the Rockin’ Rodders car show, is gearing up! Past and new participants have been sending in their reservations. If you would like information on participating in this community family event please call the Chamber number listed on the back of this newsletter. Volunteers are needed, if interested please let us know. Save the date, you won’t want to miss this special day at Eagle Rock Park.

I want to thank Kaye Beckham for organizing our Business Crime Alert meeting that was scheduled on May 17th at Colombo’s Restaurant. We all know that crime is up in Eagle Rock, from armed robbery to gang shootings, break-ins and auto theft. Unfortunately, this newsletter will go to press prior to the meeting. A report on this meeting will be in our June issue. Directors and guests will have an update at our monthly meeting May 24th. If you would like to attend our lunch meeting please RSVP so that we may accommodate you.

As crime is ever increasing in our community please keep an eye on anything out of the ordinary which includes those looking suspicious, including unfamiliar cars cruising your neighborhood and please note alarms going off. Watch out for your business neighbor, jot down license plate numbers, note descriptions of possible suspects. If a crime is not in the process, call the Northeast Station [see Crime Stats in this issue] if you witness a crime in process please call 911 immediately.

On a happier note.... Jamba Juice is now open, stop in and say hello.

See You Around Eagle Rock

Michael Nogueira, Jr.

IN AND AROUND EAGLE ROCK

APRIL MIXER

The April Mixer was hosted by manager Jessica Hiller at Starbucks Coffee on the “outdoor patio”. Jessica and her staff went all out wanting everyone present to sample everything that Starbucks has to offer. This not only included the wonderful array of hot and cold coffees and teas, but also their fabulous deserts, in which there was quite a variety, along with their delicious sandwiches. Jessica instructed those interested in how to use their espresso machine and to sample the many different flavors that may be added to your coffee. A flavor for everyone!

A special thank you to Jessica for a delightful evening and to those who brought a raffle gift and purchased raffle tickets. When you’re out and about, stop in Starbucks, say hi to Jessica or one of her very pleasant staff members. Order a coffee and ???? - the choices are many.

Since opening last year, Jessica has graciously donated and contributed to many causes in our community, this month she is graciously contributing to the Northeast Los Angeles Police Department’s First Memorial Motorcycle Run to Lake Arrowhead. Funds raised go directly into the Police Memorial Fund, specifically for widows and children of fallen officers.

EAGLE ROCK COMMUNITY FLAG RAISING

It has been along time coming, but yes, our Eagle Rock community flag is ready to be raised. A very appropriate day has been selected, June 14th, Flag day. This grand event will start with a reception at 6:30 p.m., at which time memorabilia will be available for purchase, the flag raising ceremony will commence promptly at 8:00 p.m. Our local LAFD Station 42 crew will be performing the honor. The Eagle Rock Community flag will fly in the wind along side our United States and our California State flags. The three flags will be very visible from the 2 & 134 freeways. The site is located at the back parking lot of the Rusty Pelican/Cove Restaurant off of Harvey Drive. Representatives from our Northeast Los Angeles Police Department will also be present, along with our political and community organization representatives. The

news media and Adelphia is also expected.

Our flag and the three poles came to be through an agreement with two cellular phone companies to place a cellular tower in Eagle Rock. Our community flag is through the courtesy of Nextel.

Please join us for a memorable event, hosted by the ERCC and TERA.

CRIME ALERT

No doubt about it, crime is higher in Eagle Rock then it has ever been. 337 crimes from the first of January to mid April. Factored into that number is: * 95 stolen cars

* 125 car break-ins

* 60 burglaries

* 1 car jacking with shooting injury

* 1 homicide

Not to mention after these stats, we had an armed robbery in a popular local restaurant and a few days later in broad day light, a shooting at a fast food restaurant on Colorado Boulevard.

We have the highest crime rate in the seven communities that make up the Northeast Division, our community, which has always had the lowest crime rate. - our safe community that one could walk through the neighborhood at any time and feel comfortable.....not anymore! Toward that end the ERCC and the Northeast Community Police Advisory Board hosted a business crime alert meeting at Colombo’s Restaurant May 17th.

Related information- please see current Crime Stat Report on pg. ????

Be An Entrepreneur

Wanting to be your own boss and start up a small business? Take the leap, fulfill your dream. Realize your interests and expertise then “find a need and fill it.” “Find a Need and fill it”, six words that Martin Small, the man said to have invented roll-on deodorant, insisted that those six words were a ticket to becoming a millionaire. Those were the six words that motivated Horace Hagedorn, with the help of a scientist who transformed fertilizer into water-soluble crystals, he founded Miracle-Gro in 1950. We all know what happened to that company, a $350 million business that today captures 85% of the home fertilizer market. Words to aspire by, “Find a need and fill it!”
