BUSINESS NOTES
COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY
Your Chamber is supporting the development of a new Eagle Rock Business
Directory. This is not a Yellow/White pages style directory, rather a handy size
directory featuring all of our local businesses. This easy to use directory will
be distributed within the neighborhood to each household and business. Your
Chamber is always looking for a way to support our local businesses and we
believe that this handy directory will make our business information more
accessible to neighborhood residents.
Advertising in this directory is open to business members and non-members.
However, please note that ad rates, while reasonable, are substantially lower
for members. Be a part of the project. The advertising rates are very reasonable
and affordable. If you would like to join the chamber you will receive a
no-charge line ad. You will also be eligible, but under no obligation, to
advertise under the member rate. Also in this directory will be all of our local
service clubs and organizations, schools, churches, and the Los Angeles City
service entities including our government offices. Please join us to make this
Chamber project a marketing success for our business community.
You may have already met Julian Moran, from Monkey Java Studios, he has been
hitting the pavement walking the boulevards visiting each business. If he hasn’t
met you yet and you would like to be included or would like further information
please call Julian at 323 340-8522.
MANAGING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS
Businesses come in all shapes and sizes and with them, business owners who
operate them have different ideas, methods and management skills. Every business
leader’s goal is to produce a profit and provide a standard of living that is
acceptable. As entrepreneurs where do we start, what is the key to building a
successful business?
According to Gregg Steinberg, President of International Profit Associates,
to build a successful business it is necessary for management and employees at
all levels to be able to measure and monitor daily activity and performance
against quotas and goals. To do that, key benchmarks and matrices must be
trended in each individual operating unit. Consistent trending analysis then
dictates the ability to create realistic goals and quota levels. Performance
should be measured against this data on a real time, day by day –if not hour to
hour - basis. This allows levels of management and ownership to control revenue,
profitability, cash flow and ease of operation in a meaningful way every day.
Regardless of whether you are an entrepreneur running a fledgling business or a
manager operating a global enterprise, this rule applies.
There are also keys to running a successful business that create a
competitive advantage that link a more intangible view. These are tied to
management’s vision and mission statement. Vision is a long-term strategic and
organizational view of the broad picture and what you want the business to
become. The mission statement is the roadmap that ties the businesses operating
methodologies and procedures to long-term vision.
Clearly, for a business to be successful, it must have a full compliment of
tangible and intangible resources defined by management and utilized at all
levels of the business operation.
The difference between managing for profit and managing for cash flow is very
important. In the early stages of business development, cash flow is king. While
it is certainly always a key component that must be managed closely, early stage
businesses most often fail because of lack of it. Profitability, on the other
hand, while certainly necessary for long term viability of the business, is not
necessary for short term survival. Certainly many businesses produce little or
no profit but manage to stay in business anyhow. While many businesses manage
based on checkbook balances and cash availability, long term survival is
dependent on an enterprise being able to generate a reasonable profit, which in
turn generates cash flow. In other words, while it is possible to generate cash
flow without profit, it is also possible to generate profit while reducing cash
flow. Therefore, it is necessary that both accounts receivable and the bottom
line be managed aggressively on a daily basis in order to ensure ongoing
success.
A business that lives by this key tenet of business [real-time, factual data
decision-making] finds itself able to operate in an entrepreneurial,
decision-making mode, regardless of the size of the business.

HEALTH IS IMPORTANT TOO
Want to stay healthy so you can run that business? Of course you do!. Visit
MyPyramid.gov to find out how you should be eating. When was the last time you
took stock of your eating habits? Do you know what a good diet looks like? Do
you know how much food you should eat each day based on your age, gender and
activity level? Don’t you think you should? To find out, take a few minutes to
explore the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Food Guide. Follow the prompts
on the above interactive web-site where you can create a personal food pyramid
for yourself. Going to the web site is a chance for you to evaluate where your
diet is right now, and where it should be. The pyramid may not solve your eating
problems, but it’s an important new tool, and you should not be afraid to use
it...and who knows, it may put you on the right path to a healthy diet.
